No man better than Bolton for our top job

adriana-cohen-boston-herald-Feb012015-john-boltonFormer U.N. Ambassador John Bolton says he’s seriously considering a run for president in 2016 — and I can’t think of a better man for the job.

Bolton told me, “I’m not saying no” Friday on “Boston Herald Drive.” He says he’ll make an official announcement soon.

This is outstanding news both for our country and the GOP. With the rolling calamity of national security threats facing America here and abroad, Republicans need a candidate who is an experienced leader in foreign policy. They need someone who is an expert in international affairs and understands how to effectively deal with our enemies, instead of being manipulated by them.

Bolton is that man. He was ambassador to the U.N. under President George W. Bush, and has served in innumerable leadership positions throughout his impressive career in foreign affairs. There’s simply no other 2016 Republican presidential hopeful who has Bolton’s foreign policy chops — giving him an edge in a crowded field.

In a recent Rasmussen poll, 65 percent of Americans said they believe a terror attack is likely to occur in the U.S. over the next year. Foreign policy and national security will be the No. 1 issue on the ballot in 2016.

Under the feckless Obama administration, we’ve seen Russia expanding its map lines, and ISIS taking over Iraq and parts of Syria while committing mass genocide in their quest to impose religious totalitarianism. We’ve seen radical Islamic terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram engage in religious persecution and displace more than one million Nigerians. Then there’s North Korea and its cyber-terrorism with its recent Sony Pictures hack attack. And most troubling is the ongoing threat of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons capability, potentially putting our ally Israel in grave mortal danger.

There’s no doubt that President Obama’s incoherent, rudderless foreign policy has made the world a much less safe place. America needs a president who can re-establish our country’s leadership around the globe.

We simply cannot afford to elect another community organizer with zero foreign policy experience. To do so would be perilous to the United States and to our allies.
